I hope the information below will help you out.
Make sure to bring your UKC easy entry card and entry forms all filled in.
Make sure you go to the show grounds, the day or night before you plan to show.
Make sure to google satilite so that you know visually what to expect and program location in GPS.
Not only will you ensure you know where you are going to, you can also set up early and secure a spot.
Don't take more room that you really need either.
We go the night before and set everything up
on our grass mat. Our grass mat not only softends the hard concrete floor where we will be standing
but it holds any dog hair that has come off our dogs and designates our spot, so no one will move our stuff
In over 25 years of doing this I have never (knock on wood) had anything stolen.

*Click here to see what to PACK FOR THE SHOW:

Make sure crate train your dog well in advance
It is too stressful for a dog to be leashed for an entire day
they need to be able to have some quiet and privacy to rest between shows
and that place is in a cage NOT in your car or van.
Plastic cages are the most secure but also the most heavy.
Canvas cages are light weight, take up less room
but some clubs will not allow canvas cages at Dog Sport Events so read your premium list !!
When buying a canvas cage, ensure the top is mesh to allow heat to escape
because canvas cages build up heat like a tent.

What not to wear to a dog show !

...Hershey Thumbnail ...Hershey Thumbnail

Laugh if you will but I have seen it all. As well as huge busted women that don't wear sports bras
or at least well fitting bras, and have their ta ta's almost bounce over their shoulders.
This is most distracting in the ring. As a handler you are there to show case your dog.
Your job is to blend in the background. No sparkly shoes or outfits, no purses in the ring (yes I've seen it)
No long coats, or ponchos, or flip flops. Make sure you wear shoes you can run in.
Ideally if your dog has a good topline, you should wear a colour that contrasts to your dog
so your dog pops and stands out as do all their good features.

What to wear to a dog show
For women a skirt and blazer is ideal.
If you have a dark dog then a lighter outfit will help them stand out along with neutral hose
(PACK extra tights, tights don't run like hose) and shoes.
Don't forget the pockets for bait !

Flat comfortable shoes with grip on the bottom is essential.
Always bring a comfortable outfit to pack up and go home in, (ie track pants or scrubs).
Some people bring nylon pants to slip on to go toilet the dogs outside in the winter
boots or crocs to potty dogs in the early morning.
Make sure that you get a show photo if it is your first show.
You will NEVER get that moment back.
Also don't be afraid to ask someone also showing to take photos or video of you in the ring with your camera
You can always get video or photos of them in return and email the photos to them, as a thank you :)
Also if you are able to go for a coffee run it is always a good idea to offer to pick up some for your neighbors
or people that have helped you. Everyone appreciates a cup of coffee !

MORE ABOUT CONFORMATION:

CANADA - CKC (Canadian Kennel Club)

In Canada to show a Poodle with the Canadian Kennel Club you will need to
hire a Professional Handler. Some are listed on the Canadian Professional Handlers Association website

USA

PHA HANDLERS DIRECTORY
...
In UKC Poodles may be shown in the "SPORTING CLIP".
Poodles can have this clip at ANY age
Face, feet, throat and base of tail are shaved.
The coat is NOT to be any longer than 1" on the body.
There is a pompon on the end of the tail. Coat on the top of the head is scissored into a cap.
The rest of the body and legs are trimmed following the outline of the dog.
The body coat shall be no longer than 1 inch in length. Leg hair may be slightly longer.

PUPPY CLIP
This is seen at AKC, FCI, UKC, CKC shows on Poodles under 12 months of age
Of course the longer the coat the better the chances of winning.
We can assist any of our puppy people with getting their Puppy groomed for show.

Continental Clip
This clip is seen on Standard Poodles over 12 months of age.
The coat from eyes to end of ribs is kept long.
The Poodle's "bangs" are called a "Top Knot" and that is held in place with no more than "3" elastic bands

Modified Continental Clip or Historically Correct Continental (HCC Clip)
In this clip there is no top knot to be held in place with elastics, instead the head or cap is scissored
into shape and the coat is kept shorter, closer to the body.

Some of our puppy people have enjoyed showing (conformation).
Conformation is the beauty contest. To do well at this, it does take minimal practice.
What we like our dogs to do is to be able to "stand stay".
This can be accomplished by the "free stack". This is when owners stand in front of their puppy with treat saying "wait".
when puppy holds that standing position for a few seconds and before puppy moves,
the puppy gets the reward of tiny bits of treat shoved in their mouth and a "YES" as praise.

Showing your Poodle's Bite to the Judge

Show Stacking Your Poodle

"Stacking" is when Owners would stack puppy by placing feet where they should be as in the photo above
and the puppy will be told to hold that position for a short period of time. Owner can "hold" the puppy in place under the chin
and push puppies tail up and forward slightly over their body.
But the main thing is the owner can control their puppy and puppy will listen to them and not bounce crazily around.
We have NO problems also showing an untrained puppy in the ring for the owners. When it comes to showing off,
Poodles are just natural at this.

Believe it or not this is the same dog photo taken same day 5 minutes apart.
First photo is someone holding their own dog, next photo is myself stacking their dog for them.
As you can see "feet" placement makes a world of difference as does "stringing up" the dog with the collar
and pushing that tail right up over the back

Always train puppies on a flat collar and not a choke chain because there are no corrections.
Martingale Lead - Medium Weight Link to Collar at PetEdge
This is what I used to train my pups with to get used to showing and having only a positive experience with no corrections.

When they are say... 6 months of age then I will switch to a proper show lead and fine show collar.

...
Fine (Medium) Hex-Link Chain Chokes
Cherrybrook Show Chains
These jewelry style chokes lend dignity to any dog and reduces fur breakage.
Usually for my Standard Poodle puppy 14" will be good to start and 16" will be good for adults.
You can also use Nylon show collars that are less expensive, less breakage, match leads, but are not as flashy.

Needs n Desires Leads
Nylon show leads by Cherry Brook
At every show I can't count the number of people that come up and ask to borrow one of my smaller
24" to 36" (2 foot or 3 foot) shorter leads. Longer leads are cumbersome to use as you constantly bunch them up and then drop them.
Shorter leads are less stressful to use
I use the medium or larger ones as they cut less into your hands.
Very lightweight and visually unimposing, yet strong enough for everyday use.
Easy to handle and does not detract from the appearance of the dog in the show ring.
Matching Collars available.

.....

You may be tempted to use these glamorous leads.
However I myself have gotten caught up and these with beads cutting into my hand.
IF you are wishing these leads then I would suggest a Braided Kangaroo Leather Dog Show Lead

COAT CARE FOR SHOWING

This is my Grooming Shop

Make sure to get at least a 36" table
If you are really serious and have the room you may wish to consider
a Hydraulic grooming table.

R. Rover Hydraulic Grooming Table
For under $400.00 you can get this table that goes down to the ground
probably 2' from the floor and will save you from lifting your Poodle onto the table
We got ours from Costco

Edemco Folding/Telecoping Grooming Arm
these are the newest style of grooming arm and are just easier to pack, if pricey to purchase get 48"
You can also just get the regular 48" grooming arms and noose from Walmart or PetEdge
The 36" arms that usually come with tables are generally going to be too short.

DREMEL - If you are going to show then your puppy as to have "barely there" nails.
You can use regular clippers, but you will never get as short and neat as you can with a dremel.
you can use battery operated ones, we use plug in ones and a course sander bands.

Hershey Thumbnail
Take a normal kitchen rack or self and wrap with towel or foam duct tape in place
This will form a bench for your show Poodle to rest their head on
when you are working on their top knot
OR… You can also buy them online, at Clear View Creations they are called a Poodle chin rest
You will need your Poodle puppy to be used to being on a table with head resting or in a grooming noose
laying down and on their sides to be groomed daily.

I have metro and The Kool Dry Dryer by Chris Christensen Systems and nothing
compares to the velocity or force of the Laube Forced Air Dryer. I love the new longer hose too.
After you towel dry you will use this to get the majority of the water out of the coat.

I use the Double K stand dryer. I have edemco dryer that does not heat up enough or blow enough volume.
This stand dryer can be used against the cage to aid the coat in drying a bit more, but it's main
job is to do finished drying with some product in the coat a groomer can take a slicker brush and
brushing against the natural lay of the coat, will fluff up the coat while straightening it.

Greyhound comb or Buttercomb
This is what you will use when spraying up your coat

Chris Christensen pin brush
longer the bristle for the longer coat. No balls at the end of the pins !

Long rattail comb to help you section the coat for wrapping
Some people may also use knitting needles or chop sticks

One 'n Only Argan Oil Spray Treatment - by One 'n Only
Use this on the coat prior to wrapping coat.
Will promote growth and prevent breakage
Available at Sally's Beauty Supply or amazon.

Size will depend on what you are comfortable with
Usually size 1/4" or next size up will do.
You can get these at grooming stores or beauty supply stores like Sally's
Make sure to always cut the bands out. NEVER pull them out of the coat

You can get these at Lainee ltd

Groomers Edge Grimeinator Deep Cleaning Shampoo
I use this on my show coats as cleans the dirtiest, smelliest animals gently and thoroughly
*Note, I did have a couple dogs break out in hot spots from a bad batch of this.

(make sure first ingredient is not water as will take long to dry)

Plush Puppy OMG Grooming Spray

Grow hair on a doorknob

Ingredients:

1/2 cup smooth peanut butter (125ml)
1/2 cup creamed honey(125ml)
1/2 cup powdered coat supplement (125ml)
1/2 cup liquid coat supplement (125ml)
You can use any commercial powdered coat supplement like Mira Coat, Johnny Be Good,
Missing Link etc . You can also use any liquid coat supplement - Linatone etc

preparation instructions:
Put peanut butter in microwave safe bowl. Warm on high for 30 seconds.
Add in honey and blend well. Add oil and powder coat supplements, just a small amount at a time and mix well.
Mixture will be thick. Spoon into two cup storage container. Store in refrigerator.
Stores very well in fridge for a long time. Feed 1 tsp per day.

Note:
There are several variations of this coat growth recipe on the Internet.
Equal parts of these 4 ingredients is what is said to be the best to make and to give.
Be careful how much you give. If you give a larger amount, it can result in diarrhea.
This can also pack on weight, so use sensibly.

This can also be helpful for convalescing dogs or bitches after a season when they blow their coat
or after a dog has had anesthetic that can result in a dry brittle coat.
Some say that they have not noticed it making the coat grow, but it does seem to make the coat stronger
more resilient, less brittle and very glossy.

Here are a couple of my good friends who I look forward to seeing each show !!

Mary Ann and her Thai Ridgeback Dog Shimmer
